Hair accessories

One of the biggest assets or drawbacks to your personal style and fashion sense is your hair. As a teenage girl, your hair is going to be a great way to express yourself, and to dress up an otherwise basic look. The following is a look at some of the options for hair accessories, and how they can change your look:

Headbands: When it comes to headbands your choices are virtually endless. You can do a thin, stretchy headband used to give you a little lift in the front, and hold your bangs back. You can go with a thick fabric headband. A thick plastic headband. A headband that goes all the way around your head, or one that sits on top. Besides the actual materials and styles, you then get a whole host of colors, prints, and width choices. A headband is a great way to dress up a pony tail, or to get your hair out of your face while still looking hip. A headband can break up the colors on your head, adding visual interest to your look. Headbands are a big plus if they fit your head, and if you can wear them all day without getting a headache.

Flowers: A flower is a great way to make basic hair look fresh, fun, or flirty. You can clip a flower in with a side pony tail to make your hair look really pulled together, not just pulled up. You can clip a flower above your ear on hair that is left down to add some visual interest, or to change up an otherwise common look. The other great thing about flowers for your hair is that you get a whole range of colors, sizes, and even types. You can also choose clips with rhinestone centers of the flowers, or use live flowers. The possibilities add a lot of flair to your hair.

Clips: Clips are functional, but they can also be fashionable. You can clip your hair half up with a designer clip and get a good looking do in a matter of second. You can clip your bangs back to keep them out of your face, and have a fun, interesting piece to draw they eye. Clips are fun, functional, and fashionable, depending on how you use them.  A clip is a great hair accessory for someone with short hair.

Ribbons: Ribbons can make a basic do into something cute, whimsical, or fun. On the mornings when you just do not have time to spend doing your hair, pulling your hair into a pony tail, and tying a ribbon around it to add interest can be huge. When you can’t find a headband that works for your outfit, a ribbon can take the place, and give you all the benefits.  Ribbons can be used in many ways, and almost always enhance the look, whether your hair is short or long.

Scarves or bandanas: Scarves and bandanas are not just for the neck. Tied into your hair, or as a head wrap, they act as a great way to add interest, cover hair that needs washing, or just add style to an otherwise boring look. A scarf or bandana can be folded to whatever width looks and works best with your head shape and style.

Tips for finding a great stylist

Trying to find a good hair stylist is no simple task.  It is a wonderful thing when you can find a stylist who you’re comfortable with and who is able to give you the perfect look.  The best stylist will be aware of your tastes, and perhaps be able to give you some new ideas that would work for your face shape that you hadn’t even thought of.  It is always good to find a professional to cut your hair; someone who has many clients and stays current with the cuts that are in style.  If you can find this perfect stylist, than you won’t have to be worried every time you go to get your hair cut that it will turn out horribly.  Having this peace of mind when handing yourself over to someone who will greatly affect your appearance is priceless.  How then do you find this dream stylist?  Here are a few ideas:

1. The absolute best way to be confident in your stylist’s work, is to see examples.  Many stylists will keep albums of the work they’ve done.  Before you have your hair cut, ask if you can see some of their work.  This will give you extra confidence in the choice you’ve made.  The easiest way to find a stylist you like is to look for examples of their work in real life.  If you see someone with a fabulous haircut, don’t be afraid to ask them who did the cut.  They will be flattered that you noticed their style, and you might just end up with the perfect

stylist.  One thing to remember when doing this is to try and find someone who has a similar hair texture as yours.  Certain stylists may specialize in a specific texture of hair, and different textures are very different to cut.  The color and length aren’t necessarily important, but you should make sure that the stylist you are visiting has experience styling hair of your texture.

2. Another tip for finding a good stylist is to pay attention to their clientele.  We already discussed making sure that they have plenty of experience with your hair texture, but there’s more to it than that.  Is your stylist always available?  You want to have someone who is in demand working with your hair.  This doesn’t mean that they need to be overpriced and located in an expensive part of town, it only means that they should have extremely loyal clients and plenty of them.  Pay attention when you go to visit your stylist for the first time of who else is calling them, or attending their salon.  Are they familiar with their clients?  If you see that your stylist has repeat business than that means they satisfy their customers.  When people want to come back to their salon, it tells you that they do a good job, and that you will

probably want to come back time and time again as well.

3. A final tip is to always remember that flash is not nearly as important as experience.  Pay more attention to the stylists clientele and ability than to how youthful and expensive their salon is.  Don’t be shy to ask your stylist how long they have been working.  Although some new stylists do wonderful work, the more experience one has, the better.

Finding a great stylist can be a difficult task sometimes, but once you do you can be comfortable knowing that you’ll look great every time you leave from a new cut.  Remember to pay attention to their client’s looks and also to the stylist’s haircut.  If you like their haircut, than you most likely have similar tastes to what you think looks good.  Good luck out there!

The long and the short of it, how to know what length is best for you

At one point or another, most of us get the desire to try out new looks and do something drastically different with our hair.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes it really doesn’t.  If you’ve done this with your look, people usually tell you “It’s just hair, it’ll grow back.”  This is something, that although true, is a lot easier to say than to accept when you are stuck with a haircut you hate.  Finding the correct length that works for you is a difficult thing to do.  It’s hard to envision what a cut is going to look like before it’s done, and sometimes you find out all to late that a certain length is not correct for you.  Here are some tips on how to get started on the path to discovering what length is best for you.

DO NOT make impulse decisions about your hair length.  You need to really study it out and think it through before you rush off to the nearest ten dollar barber and have your hair chopped. The best thing you can do before snapping to a decision, is to talk to people who know what they’re doing.  The most comfortable thing when making these important choices, is having a stylist who you trust.  If you can talk to a professional who knows your style and is really good at what they do, they will have the ability to analyze you, your face shape and hair texture, and be able to guide you to a good length choice.  If you are really concerned about the choice, another great place to turn when making the decision is technology.  There are several awesome computer programs available that will allow you to download an image of yourself onto the computer, and then will show you how you would look with different hair cuts, colors, and styles.  If it’s important for you to see the look in order to visualize it properly, this is a good option.

When trying to determine your perfect hair length, face shape is something that needs to be considered very severely.  Some face shapes simply do not look very good when combined with certain lengths, and you need to learn what will flatter your form.  This is not always very obvious, but is so important!  When choosing a hair color, you would not want to pick one that clash with your skin.  It is just as important to make sure that your length flatters your face shape and jaw line.  For example, it is generally a bad idea for people with a round face shape to have bob style haircuts.  Having the line of your hair run right at the roundest part of your face, accentuates that feature, and can make you look distorted and oddly shaped.  A round face shape generally looks better with a longer cut.  In the same respect, people with oval shaped, thin faces can sometimes look odd with very long, straight hair.  It accentuates the length of the face and causes them to appear distorted.  Balancing your face shape with your hair length is extremely important.

Finally, hair texture plays a big role in determining which length is best for you.  If you have very full and frizzy hair, that looks gorgeous in long curls, it may just appear frizzy and out of control when it’s short.  If you have hair that struggles for body, it may appear limp, lifeless and weighty if it is too long.

Finding this perfect length can be difficult with some bumps along the road, but if something goes wrong, always remember, it really does grow back

How to get the movie star look with little work

Like most people, you probably see celebrities on magazines or on television, and wonder why they look so different than the rest of us.  They have incredible personal style, are dressed in the best designer clothing, and above all, what makes them stand out are their perfect hairstyles.  Most celebrities do not achieve the look they have on their own, but have hairstylists.  So how do we, without a posse of people following us around to make sure we look fabulous, achieve the same look? Here are a few simple suggestions:

1. Pay particular attention to volume.  In terms of volume, celebrity hairstyles are usually extreme.  There are many beautiful styles, both sleek and full, but in-betweens are rarely seen.  A celebrity who exemplifies this concept is Lindsay Lohan.  She changes her hair color all the time, but she has two basic styles when at any party or event.  Her hair is either smooth straight or curly and full of body; she never has an in between look.  The reason for this is that when your hair is neither sleek nor full, you’re not really making a statement.  The movie star life and look is all about creating an image and looking glamorous.  If you are going for the sleek look, go sleek!  You can pull your hair into a tight twist at the back, or attempt the Jennifer Aniston look of letting your locks hang down smoothly to frame your face.  If you are going for the voluminous look, work it!  Don’t be afraid of extremes, and work to get everything you can out of your hair.  Big hair is beautiful and it shows that you are confident and not afraid to make a statement.

2. One of the absolute most important parts of the movie star hairstyle is the lack of fly aways and frizz.  With the acception of the rare occasion that an actress uses frizz purposefully to add to her unique style, it is absolutely prohibited from the movie star look.  An untamed mane of hair can turn even the most beautiful hairdo into a complete disaster.  You need to look refined, put together and classy in order to achieve this beautiful look, and this is one of the most difficult things to do.  How then, do you tame fly aways?  There are a few secrets to doing this successfully.

One of the best things to do is find a great product to help you with this.  Even the shampoo and conditioner you use can make a tremendous difference.  Look for types that specifically claim to tame wild hair, and see if it helps.  Hair wax and oils can be a great help, so don’t be afraid to try new products.  Taking a pomade and rubbing it gently throughout all your hair towards the end of styling can work magic.  Also, when completing your style, you can spray aerosol hairspray onto a comb  and then gently comb that through your hair to add a finishing touch.

3. A final thing to remember is to avoid heat styling and touching your hair as much as possible if you are trying to create a smooth and refined movie star look.  When you get out of your shower, do not towel dry your hair; this will only separate your individual strands of hair and cause them to go in all different directions.

Remember not to be afraid of trying new things.  Use products you’ve never tried before and attempt different styling techniques.  If you want to have a movie star look, you’ll most likely need to put a lot of time into creating your hairstyle, so set aside a block of time to try out these techniques, because once you discover what really works for you, you’ll be feeling more confident, and looking more fabulous.

Best style for your tresses when you go out in your prom dresses

As prom night approaches, you have almost all of your plans ready; you have your date, the perfect dress, dinner plans, transportation, manicure, jewelry and the perfect shoes. Usually the last thing to fall into place, and one of the most important parts of your evening, is a great hairstyle.  The hairstyle you choose for your prom night can really affect your entire look, and so it’s very important to make sure that you chose the correct one to compliment your personal style and the dress that you are wearing.  Here are some tips to help you ensure that you pick the correct ‘do to complete your prom look.

1.  The classic prom hairstyle is an up-do with lots of curls, all meticulously pinned in place.  This is the most common style for good reasons.  If you’re planning on doing a lot of dancing on prom night, this hairstyle helps you to keep you cool.  Having your hair down will be extremely hot and your hair will most likely begin to flatten.  Another reason to style your hair in the classic up-do is that it is beautiful.  This hairstyle shows that you put effort into looking your best.  In addition to simply looking gorgeous, this hairstyle compliments most dress styles.  With your hair off you neck, your beautiful jewelery and dress neckline are showcased.

Another thing to remember about styling your hair this way is that there are many things you can do to diversify your look.  Not all up-dos are the same, so if you’re worried about having the same hairstyle as everyone else, there are things you can do to change it up.  One very pretty way to add something extra to this classic style is to begin it with an upside down French braid.  Flip your head upside down and have your stylist  begin the braid from the nape of your neck and stop about halfway up the back of your head.  At this point, you can begin the curls, either pinned or dangling.  Another great way to throw a twist into this look is to do just that…make it a French twist.  It’s a gorgeous look that’s always adds a sense of class to formal wear.

2. One hair style that is becoming more popular for prom is very opposite of the previous suggestion.  Large, voluminous, loose curls that are completely free-flowing seem to be the look of the season.  It is important that they are very smooth with few fly-aways, and created with a large-barreled curling iron.  This style can look very beautiful, but as previously mentioned, with your hair down, it will be difficult to stay cool while dancing.  This hairstyle looks the best with a strapless dress because your locks will not be covering the sleeves of your dress.  In a strapless dress, wearing your hair down serves as an accent to your outfit.

3. The third hairstyle that will accent your dress is to wear your hair half up.  This is difficult to pull off while still maintaining a formal look, but if you do decide to pull it up, remember to keep the style voluminous with lots of curls to keep it a classy look instead of an every day look.

Whichever look you chose, make sure that you have it planned out in advance, so that you’re not scrambling on prom day to create the perfect hairstyle.  If you plan on having a stylist create your look, have them booked at least a month in advance, and discuss your dress style with them as well as which hair-dos you like.  Good luck and  have a fabulous prom night!

Best kept product secrets, what hair products are a must buy deal

For most of us, buying hair care products on a budget is essential.  This can feel really overwhelming when you are faced with hundreds upon hundreds of hair care products, and don’t know which ones will give you the look you want without destroying your hair.  In most cases, there are budget hair products that you can purchase at a local store that can produce the same results as salon products…you just need to know which among the hundreds to buy.  Here are some fabulous items I have found at my local stores, that have given me some great results.  These are some of the best kept secrets in hair care products:

These days, purchasing shampoo and conditioner is especially confusing with all the different types that are now available.  It seems that every month there’s a new type: invigorate your curls, tame your curls, straighten, plump, smooth, sleek, extra shine, protect, repair, for color treated hair etc.  This can get so confusing, and most of these shampoos have a very similar make-up, but every once and a while there is a product that really helps to produce the advertised outcomes.  One of the best shampoo and conditioner brands that does this is the John Frieda collection.  You can find it at almost all stores, and it produces very satisfying results.  It is especially good for creating a smooth, sleek look, while reducing fly aways.  The John Freida anti-frizz serum comes in a small bottle, and you just have to use a small amount to get a sleek, smooth look for any hair type.

One of the absolute best kept product secrets is 2-in-1 children’s shampoo.  It is completely amazing and can do wonders for your hair.  Suave and L’oreal are both great brands.  They’re really inexpensive and the 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner is really great  for people who are in a hurry to get ready in the morning.  Children’s shampoo is designed specifically to be gentle.  It makes your hair softer, gives you less tangles, and creates that youthful shine.  No one thinks to use children’s shampoo, but it’s a wonderful product secret.

Another tip to remember is that although people are always talking about home remedies, some work, while others can really damage your hair.  One really great example of a home product is using lemon to lighten your hair.  When using lemon, however, you should pulverize an entire lemon, apply it to your hair, and sit in the sun, instead of simply pouring the juice onto your hair.  The oil from the peel will keep your hair moisturized so that it has less of a chance of drying out from the acidic juice.

These products are some of the best kept secrets and defiantly a good place to start if you are looking for new hair care lines to sample, but above all, it is important to remember that products react differently to different people’s hair.  Try out a few different products to

see what works for you, and pay attention to the effect they have on your hair.  If you notice that it is becoming brittle or has excessive drying, stop using it and try something else.  Also, don’t become discouraged if a product you have used stops working the way that it

used to.  With almost all products, over time, they loose their effect as hair develops a build-up of these substances.  The solution for this is just to try something new, and try your old product once again when you decide you need a change.

Your personal hairstyle

Stylish teenYour personal hairstyle is something that helps define you. It helps you feel good about yourself. It is something that goes with your lifestyle, personality, etc. If you are ultra conservative, a short spiked cut dyed pink is not going to work for you. So, the following are some tips for how to choose your personal hairstyle so that you are happy with it:

  1. Consider your lifestyle: This is the most important consideration, as it will affect you more than any other consideration.
    • Your hair is a big part of who you are, and it is a great way to freshen a look, redefine an image, or change up your image. However, if it does not fit your lifestyle, it will be short lived.
    • Your hairstyle needs to fit the kind of activities you engage in most often. It has to fit the kind of time and effort you will realistically put into it each day, and the way you live your life.
    • For example: If you are active frequently, and do not want to bother with spending a lot of time on your hair, a long straight cut that is low maintenance,  easy to pull back into a pony tail, or wear a headband, or a ribbon, or another accessory for a fun look is great. If you want something that is faster and even easier, a short cut that is wash and go, or requires a bit of product but that is it, is best.
    • If you are someone who gets sick of the same look, and wants to be able to change it up often, or who does not mind spending time getting ready, a mid length cut, or a short layered cut that can be styled several different ways may work best for you. Or, you can go with a long cut that has a lot of layers, highlights etc. Cuts that require more maintenance, but also mean more style are probably right for you.
    • You have to be honest with yourself about your lifestyle, and what your hair requirements are. If you go for a short cut that takes time and effort to style each day, you may be kicking yourself and regretting it rather quickly. If you go for a long style, and find that the time it takes to wash and dry it is not working for you, you will have to re-evaluate. So, when picking your person hair style, think about your life, discuss it with your stylist and come up with something that works.
  2. Consider your personality: Your hair is a great way to express your personality. If you are fun and funky, a cut that expresses that will work well. If your moods change with the tide, you may want to go for a longer cut which allows you more flexibility with how you wear it. Your hair is going to say something about you, so make sure your personality is properly represented, whether it is through the cut or the color.
  3. Consider the message or image you want to convey: Besides the fact that you want to look as attractive as possible, your hair is going to convey something else as well. What do you want it to convey? Think about it, with the different decades came different styles. Hippies wore their hair long and lose, etc. So, do you want your hair to say you are sporty? Practical? Emo? Funny? Etc. The combination of your hair and your clothing, you create an image that says something about you. Make sure they are saying the things you want them to say.

Why you should cut off your damaged hair

teen smilingAs a teenage girl who is trying to grow your hair out, it can be difficult to accept the idea of having to trim hair regularly, or cut off damaged hair. It seems somewhat counter-productive to cut hair when you really just want to grow it out. The following is a look at why you should cut off your damaged hair, even if you are trying to grow your hair out:

  1. Long hair is wonderful, but it won’t look wonderful if it is unhealthy, and the only way to have long healthy hair is to start with healthy hair. You must cut off every inch that is considerably damaged, split ended, or too dry. If you don’t, your hair is going to be long, but full of split ends, will be course, and not very shiny or lustrous. This is not worth it.
  2. Cutting off damage prevents much further damage. When the cuticle of your hair gets damaged, breaks down, etc. your hair starts to split. The splitting is going to continue up the shaft of the hair if you do not cut the damage off. So, when you grow your hair out, just trim it a little bit each month. Hair grows on average a half inch a month, so as long as you trim off damage, but not more than half an inch of hair, your hair will continue to get longer, but stay looking healthy and beautiful at the same time. Damage to your hair will move up from the ends, it is worth repeating that the only way to stop it is to remove damage when it happens.
  3. Hair goes through trauma. Even if you are really careful with your hair, it is going to get damaged. Sun, wind, sleep, hair products, hair styling tools, etc. all damage hair. So, if you do not cut off the ends, the parts that are the oldest, and have been abused the longest, you will have hair that looks unhealthy and old. A regular trim will help reduce the amount of trauma that shows, and will help you feel good about your look. Remember, long damaged hair is never as pretty as shorter healthy hair, so even if you want long hair, you have to first focus on healthy hair, and how to get and keep healthy hair. Then, work on growing it out.
  4. When you cut off damaged hair you are left with healthy hair. Healthy hair needs to be cut far less often. Damaged hair, on the other hand, does not grow long because it breaks, and looks yucky. So, you should cut off damaged hair in order to save yourself money in between cuts, and to look your best at all times.
  5. To keep your look fresh. If you cut off damaged hair, you will always maintain a fresh look, which means you won’t get sick of your hair, or feel the need for an extreme change nearly as much.

Which are the best flat irons and hair straighteners?

flat ironsFlat irons are a must have for any teen girl’s hair tool collection. However, when it comes to flat irons and hair straighteners, there is a wide variety, both in price and material. The following is a look at some of the more popular choices, and some of the best flat irons out there:

FHI Heat Runway:
This is an expensive flat iron that will run you about $300, but it is often worth it as it gives a sleek, smooth look, and only requires you to flat iron the hair once for this look. Many flat irons require several passes through the hair to get the desired look. In addition to giving you a great look quickly, it is made with tourmaline plates, and will last you a long time. You won’t have to replace this flat iron, making it much more affordable.

Hana’s mini flat irons:
These are great flat irons, but are not really what you would want as your primary flat iron; these are smaller, and designed to be used for travel, or for touch-ups when you are on the go. They fit nicely in a purse, and work well with pretty much every hair type and texture. They are made of ceramic and tourmaline plates, and come in blue or pink.

Hai flat iron
These are great for anyone who flat irons their hair daily, and is worried about damage, as these flat irons’ ceramic plates are coated to protect hair from heat. It also offers the big advantage of being hot and ready to go in under 30 seconds, making it a great tool for when you are in a hurry.

The Instyler:
This is a great flat iron for hard to straighten hair, as it is a rotating hot iron that has 4 rows of bristles that act like a brush. The first set of bristles separates hair, then the rotating cylinder smoothes and straightens it. This is great for people with curly hair, or hair that is stubborn.

This is a great flat iron for a teen who has to buy their own beauty products, as this is not considered a professional straightener. It is basic and dependable, and it costs about $30.

These are typically great flat irons. They smooth and straighten hair. They heat quickly, and do not require many pass throughs. In addition, while they typically cost $180, you can pick them up at Costco or Sam’s Club on occasion for about $80.

A great flat iron that smoothes, straightens, and helps your hair look great will be worth the cost simply for the added confidence it can give you in your look. So, while some of the flat irons mentioned above are pricey, they are likely an investment worth making, especially if you flat iron your hair regularly.

What to do about dry hair

smiling teen on flower petalsDry hair is never a good thing as dry hair becomes damaged more easily, and will split, break, and be course. The following is a look at what you can do about dry hair:

Tip one: Brush your hair out well each day using slow gentle strokes. This is going to help dry hair because it will keep the pressure off the already damaged ends. In addition it will remove unwanted pollutants and particles from your hair that can cause further damage, and last but not least, it will help to bring the natural oils from your scalp skin down through the strands of your hair. The result will be hair that is not nearly as brittle, a good distribution of oils to keep it from becoming too dry, and a more shiny, lustrous look. All of which are great results.

Tip two: Protect your hair from the elements. Dry hair is often caused by too much sun exposure, wind exposure, etc. So, you are going to want to do what you can to protect your hair from these things, and to reverse any damage. The best way to do this is to first buy a spray on protection product that protects against sun damage. Second, consider wearing hats, wraps, scarves, etc. if you are going to be in the sun regularly or for prolonged periods of time. Third, condition your hair regularly so that it stays moist, consider using a jojoba oil and rosemary mixture. You can buy this, or make one of your own. Lastly, consider using hot oil treatments once a month or so to help replenish the natural oils in your hair.

Tip three: Protect your hair from summer fun such as chlorinated swimming pools, salty oceans, and lots of up-dos. You do this by using anti-chlorine shampoos, shampoos with moisturizers in them, by avoiding getting your hair too wet, etc., by washing your hair and conditioning to get rid of sun screen, salt, sweat, etc. And, lastly, wear your hair down on occasion to give it a break from the strain of always being pulled into a ponytail.

Tip four: Avoid shampoos that are extremely alkaline or that contain alcohol.
These dry hair out further. Instead, opt for natural shampoos, and shampoos designed for your specific hair type, as they generally have ingredients that will help with the dryness that is natural from exposure.

Tip five: Cut off damaged hair. When hair is dry, the cuticle is easier to break, or lose, and thus you get more split ends. If you do not remove them, they continue to split up your hair. So, keep split ends or dead hair cut off. Even if you are trying to grow your hair out, cutting off damage will help, as your hair can’t be repaired with shampoos, etc. It can be strengthened, but once the damage is done, the only way to repair it is to remove the dead hair.
