Need A New Hobby? Here Are Some Great Ones!

A great way to fill up your spare time is with some new activities. Instead of turning to video games and television for your spare time, you need to consider getting into some other hobbies that will really assist in enriching your life. No matter what type of hobbies you choose to pick up, you need to be able to find hobbies that are designed to help you feel better about yourself. Sometimes it just takes a little creativity and pushing yourself to find a new hobby or to take that critical step forward in doing something you have always wanted to try out. Here are some ideas to help you come up with your own hobbies.

Join a book club

One of the best ways to explore your creative mind is by joining a book club. You need to be able to look for books that are interesting to you and will really challenge your mind and cause you to “move” into a different world. As you use a book club to help you move along with the reading programs you will also be able to make new friends and will likely get in touch with people that have a lot of similar interests to you. A book club will allow you to really stretch your brain power as well so you aren’t always sitting around and doing the same old thing over and over.

Pick up a new sport

If you aren’t a fan of basketball, why not try out for a different type of sport? How about swimming? This is a sport that most people enjoy recreationally and it also gives you a chance to find a way to stay in shape without needing to spend hours on a treadmill! You can try out for a swim team if your school has one and you really think this might be something you would enjoy. Another good sport for girls is track. There are many other girls on the track team that you can easily become friends with and you will be able to create great relationships with them.

Learn to cook

One of the most rewarding things is to take a bunch of random things and create something from them. Cooking is actually a lot of fun and you can easily see how exciting it can be for you to create your own recipes and to share them with your loved ones. Consider cooking meals for your family! This is a great way to give your parents a break but it is also a great way to continue expanding on your new hobby.

Play music

Many teen girls love to listen to music and often walk around with their iPod permanently attached to their ears! If you love music, try taking some music lessons. You may surprise yourself to learn that you have a natural talent and gift for the piano or singing. Learning to play an instrument is a lot of fun and it is a great way to test yourself and to learn a new hobby that a lot of people deem impossible.

Learn a different language

With a world that is really starting to intermingle a lot, learning other languages is a great idea. There are some classes you can take in school to help you learn a new language. Study hard as this is a very difficult and challenging thing to do but learning a new language can be incredibly rewarding as well. Spanish and French are two of the most common languages that people learn and they can be a great way to help you market yourself in the future when you apply for colleges!

Making your family vacation not just bearable, but fun

fun family portraitIf your family has started making plans for your family vacation this year, you may be wondering how you could make it bearable, or even more so, how you will make it fun.

Making your family vacation fun instead of settling for bearable is a good goal to set for yourself. After all, this is your valuable vacation time as well. So why not try to make the best of what is yet to come? Who knows? You might end up having the time of your life.

The most important key to making your family vacation not just bearable, but fun, is to keep a positive outlook on the whole situation. Whether you will be going on a long road trip with your family, or a short airplane ride, a long camping trip, or a few fun filled days of fun in the sun at the beach, keep in mind those you are with. This is your family that will be with you.

Your family is made up of what should be the most important people to you in the whole world. These are the people who truly care about you. They are the ones you are here to love, and who are here to love you back.

What exactly does your family mean to you? Try to reflect and personally answer this question before you go on your family vacation. If it helps, perhaps you should sit down and write a few key things about each one of your family members that express why you love each one of them. This will help you appreciate who they are and pave the way for enjoying the time you spend with them.  It may even be a good idea to pack this list with you on your trip incase you need a little reminder of love when you become a little irritable around your family.  Making this little bit of extra effort twill help you make your family vacation not just bearable but a lot more fun.

Another key thing to do in order to make your family vacation a lot more fun (instead of settling for bearable) is to make sure you take some of your own personal essentials which will allow you some time to be alone. For example, if you are going on a long road trip, or a long camping trip, it would be a great idea to pack your MP3 player or a CD player with some headphones. So, when the time is right, and you need to take some time for yourself, put those headphones in, sit back, and enjoy.  This will help you tune out the background stuff, and help you to relax and reset yourself.

Some other personal essentials you might pack to help make your family vacation not only bearable, but fun, are:

  • Pack a journal. If you don’t already have one, buy one. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It only has to be something that has plenty of writing space that will specifically be for your own personal use. Taking a journal will help you vent out all of your frustrations in private when you feel a little agitated, angry, sad, bored, or anything negative.
  • Take a book. Find a book that sounds very interesting to you which you would love to read. Make sure it is something you are very passionate about or something that really peaks your interest. Reading a book is a really good way to take your mind off of things. A good book is like a really good movie. You can become so wrapped up in it that you can forget about all that is going on around you. Reading a book is a great way to take some time out just for you.

The last key thing that will make your family vacation not just bearable, but fun, is to do your research on the place you will be visiting before you head out. Research all of the fun activities which are available for you to enjoy when you arrive at your place of destination. For example, if you are going somewhere with a  lake, maybe you and your family can look into renting some water toys like wave runners, or a boat with some jet skis. Another example is, if your vacation is in a different city, look into nearby places that you would like to visit for some summer fun and entertainment. Places like going to a theme park, or a water park to keep you cool, or shopping at factory outlets are some ideas to help start your mind thinking about possible activities.

All in all, if you keep these three key ideas in mind (have a positive outlook, pack some personal essentials, and research fun activities) you will be certain to not only make your family vacation bearable, but you will turn it into a fun family vacation.

Fun and Effective College Prep

girl in a hallwayGetting ready to go to college can be a lot of fun, especially if you plan ahead!  The earlier you start to plan for college, the more effective you’ll be and fun you’ll have.  Then, when the college apps are due, you’ll be able to be stress-free!  There are a lot of fun things that you can do to stand out on a college application and get ready for college.  Here are a couple examples:

Clubs and Activities: Get involved in a lot of clubs and activities at your high school and in your community!  Not only are these fun for socializing and meeting peeps, but you can also strengthen you college app this way.  These activities and interests will show college application reviewers your passions and interests!  If you’re not sure what you’re interested in yet, try out a couple different activities and see what you like best.  There are lots of fun activities that can help you get involved.  After you find what’s most interesting to you, stick with it as long as possible!  Colleges really like to look for applicants that have several years of involvement with clubs and groups.  Plus, if you have a chance for some type of leadership in your club – go for it!  Colleges are always looking for people with leadership skills.

Start Saving Money: Managing and saving your money effectively can actually allow you to have more fun in the future!  Start saving your money as soon as you can by creating a savings account that you won’t touch until after you graduate.  Look into getting a summer, weekend, or after-school job.  If you start early and put at least 10-20% of your paycheck into savings, you’ll still have enough money for shopping fun while you’re still in high school!  Remember though, that the more money you save, the less you’ll be stressed about money when you actually start college.

Start Looking at Different Colleges: Sometimes looking at different colleges is like dating – you have to look around a lot before you can really decide works best for you.  Just like dating, looking at different colleges can be fun!  One effective way to start finding out about colleges is by visiting their websites or visiting their campus.  Start looking early at different colleges to find out what is most interesting to you.  Be sure to look at the admission requirements for colleges too, so that you can get a heads-up on the requirements for applying.

Challenge and Push Yourself: Sometimes challenging yourself can be the most fun and rewarding experience while you prepare for college.  In order to be a competitive applicant, check out what college prep classes are available your school, and take a couple of the courses offered!  The earlier you start, the more effective and prepared you’ll be!  Most colleges require two years of natural science classes, two years of history/social science, three years of math courses, and four years of English.  Look into taking one or two years of foreign language classes too – many colleges also will look for this in your application!  Doing well in these kinds of courses are often very fun and rewarding to the serious college applicant.  Always try to do your very best and study hard to get good grades, but don’t stress too much if your GPA is a little less-than-perfect.  Colleges are looking for applicants that are ready to challenge themselves!

Getting ready for college can be a lot of work, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun along the way!  Remember, the earlier you start, the more fun you’ll be able to have as you get ready to start college!
