How to determine what is too much makeup

When you leave your house for school in the morning, does your mom complain that you are wearing too much makeup?  If you’re not sure what the right amount of makeup is to wear, there are a couple things to do to make sure that you are not wearing too much makeup.  Here are a couple of helpful hints:

1) How much time do you spend putting on your makeup? If you are spending more than 25 minutes put on makeup in the morning, there is a good chance that you are wearing too much makeup.  For an average person with natural looking makeup, the average amount of time to apply makeup is usually 10-15 minutes.  This time frame is for a person who wears light mascara, eye liner, eye shadow, foundation, blush, and lip gloss/lipstick.  If you can apply all this makeup within this time frame, it is probably light and natural looking, so that it is not too much makeup.

2) Do your features look dark and harsh? Too much makeup often ends up looking like the lines of your face are harsh and dark.  You want to make sure that makeup gives you a very soft, womanly look.  If you makeup lines are looking very dark, then you probably are wearing too much.  Try to wear lighter makeup during the day, and only let your makeup be slightly darker when you go out at night.

3) What kinds of colors are you using? Remember, the purpose of makeup is to naturally highlight and accentuate your facial features.  If you are not wearing natural colors, and your makeup detracts from your features instead of highlighting them, you might be wearing too much makeup.  For example, wearing a lot of bright blue eye shadow and dark red blush probably is going to look like you’re wearing too much makeup.

Another thing which is a sure-fire indicator of too much makeup is the color of foundation.  If your foundation color doesn’t match your skin completely, it can make you face look either orange or pasty.   Also look closely at the way you blend your makeup – does your makeup look caked-on or does it rub off on your clothes?  If you feel like either of these things applies to you, then you probably have too much makeup on.

The color of your eyeliner can determine if it looks like you’re wearing too much makeup.  If you have blonde hair and wear black liquid eyeliner on top and underneath your eyes, it might be too much black to highlight your skin.  If you do prefer to wear black liquid eyeliner, make sure that you apply it in a thin line, close to the roots of your lashes.  The thicker your eyeliner is, and the further away it gets from your eyelash roots, the more likely it will appear that you have too much makeup on.

4) Are you wearing every single makeup product that is available? When wearing makeup, it is a good thing to keep in mind that you don’t have to wear every single makeup product that is on the store shelf.  Generally, someone who wears foundation, concealer, powder, blush, mascara, eye liner, a few shades of eye shadow, lip liner, and lipstick is probably wearing too much makeup!  Remember, you don’t have to wear every single makeup product that’s out there.  For example, you might have naturally rosy cheeks and not need to wear blush!  Or, you might have very even skin tones and not need to wear foundation at all!  If you have relatively dry skin, there is not a reason to wear powder, because it’s really geared to help get rid of shiny faces.  Remember, always strive to have a natural appearance, and your makeup will look great!

girl leaning on her pile of booksHigh school is a fun time. But friends, sports, and social activities sometimes make it difficult to concentrate on the real reason you’re there – to learn. Studying and getting good grades is important and the ticket to a good future; studies show that people who graduate from college earn up to three times more than those who don’t.

However, you don’t have to sacrifice play time for study time. By adopting a few effective study habits, you can still play while earning good grades and studying at the same time.

Take advantage of study hall.
Most schools offer a period that allows you to study of do homework. Instead of writing notes or catching up on late homework, use this time to get ahead. Study for an upcoming test, or start on the homework that was handed out in earlier periods. This is an entire hour you can use to study or do homework-take advantage of the time, and you’ll have more time to play when school is done.

Take good notes in class.
Many people find they learn better when they take good notes in class. This is a skill you will need in college as well, and developing it now will make studying for your classes in high school as well as college easier, as the information will be fresh in your mind. Keep a separate notebook or section for notes in your binder for each class. Make sure you write down all of the main ideas the teacher discusses, and make sure to date each entry. Review your notes each day in order to keep them fresh in your mind.

Make flash cards
Flash cards are an excellent study tool and a great way to study effectively. You can study your flashcards anywhere, from study hall to the library. Or, you can mute the TV during commercials and review your flash cards. That’s at least 10 minutes of studying for one 30-minute program!

Establish a schedule
One way to study effectively is to establish a schedule. You can revise it as necessary to make it work for you, but set aside a certain amount of time that is devoted to studying and studying only. This could be right after school, in the evening, or early in the morning. Once you get into this habit, you’ll be able to schedule other activities around your studying schedule.

Eliminate distractions
You should not be sending text messages, talking on the phone, or watching TV while you study. Focus all of your attention on your studying and your homework. It’s also a good idea to have a designated area for studying in which distractions are minimal. This can be a quiet spot in your house, a library, or an empty classroom.

Form a study group
If you can actually focus on studying, forming a study group with friends and classmates is a great way to study effectively. Have each member write out questions to ask the others, or go over study guides together. Quiz each other and make flash cards. Once you’re finished with your studying, reward yourselves by going out to play!

Studying effectively is an important tool you should learn now. By maximizing your study time, you have more time to enjoy playing with your friends.

Getting more Involved in the Extra-Curricular

girl playing soccerExtra-curricular activities usually are activities which are available as some kind of supplement to your education.  These activities are usually voluntary, and you usually aren’t paid for participating in them.  But, they are a great way to meet new friends, serve in leadership positions, and have fun!  Being involved in extra-curricular activities also looks really good on resumes and college applications.  Plus, studies have been done which show that students who are involved in extra-curricular activities often get higher grades than students who are not involved in extra-curricular activities.  So, you should get involved!
Getting involved in extra-curricular activities is a lot of fun and exciting!  But, getting involved can also be a little overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.  If you want to participate in extra-curricular activities and clubs, but don’t know how to start getting involved, there are a couple things that you need to know!
First of all, think about what kind of career, physical, creative, political, and social interests you have.  Then, see what kinds of activities are offered after school.  Many schools offer different kinds of clubs or activities that you can do.  If you’re worried about getting home after your extra-curricular activity, see if there is a school bus which leaves your school later.  Many schools offer activity buses so that students can participate in all of the programs that are offered.
The next thing that you will want to consider after looking at extra-curricular activities is time.  Do you have enough time to dedicate to the group?  If you are looking at serving in a leadership position in the group, will you have enough time to do a good job in that role?  For example, if you are an athletic person, you could consider joining one of the school athletic teams.  These teams often practice before and/or after school, and sometimes there are athletic meets or events on the weekends.  If you’re thinking about joining one of the school teams, make sure that you can give the team the time commitment that it needs.  If you slack off in your team responsibilities, it could not only affect you, but it could hurt the whole team!
Another thing that you’ll want to consider when looking at extra-curricular activities is money.  Although a lot of clubs and activities are free, sometimes there could be money that is involved.  For example, if you are involved in an athletic team, you might also be required to travel to athletic events and compete, and sometimes schools don’t fund the travel expenses.  If money is something that you need to consider, talk to you the school and coaches of the team before joining.
Besides athletics, there are also a lot of different clubs and other extra-curricular programs that you can get involved in!  If you like to write, you might consider joining a journalism club or a creative writing club.  If your school has a newspaper or a yearbook, you might like to get involved in writing for one of those groups!  You could also joining some of the other clubs, like creative writing club, current events club, debate club, Model United Nations, earth science club, foreign language club, or student council.
If you ever feel like you’re getting stressed out because of your extra-curricular activities, you might want to reconsider getting involved, or perhaps think about joining again later.  Make sure that you can stay on top of your homework and other responsibilities in addition to your extra-curricular work.  If you feel like you’re not able to stay on top of things, you might need to cut back.  Try and plan ahead to stay on top of everything in your life, and your extra-curricular activities will be fun and rewarding for you!
